I celebrated my 28th birthday this week. Over the years, my husband and I have fallen into a tradition of gifting each other experiences rather than material gifts. Don’t get me wrong, we give the occasional material gift if it’s something special, but we try to avoid gifts that will just end up in the back of a closet never to be seen again.
To me, sharing an experience and making new memories isn’t just a gift for one of us, it’s a gift for both of us. One year, I took my husband to Año Nuevo State Park to see the elephant seals for his birthday. Another year, he took me to Disneyland. We’ve done everything from day outings to weekend getaways to bigger vacations. We’ve gotten really creative with it recently, trying to keep it a surprise and throw each other off the scent.
If you’ve found yourself in a gift giving rut, consider these ideas:
- concert tickets
- weekend getaway to a nearby town or city
- a day of wine tasting
- whale watching
- try something new in your own hometown
- make a picnic
- beach day
- pool day
- go to an amusement park
- go to a zoo or aquarium
- mini golf
- arcade (or barcade)
The possibilities are literally endless! You don’t even need to drop a lot of money if you don’t want to. As long as you and the person you’re celebrating are having fun and making memories, you can’t go wrong.
Comment and tell me what the best experience gift you’ve ever given or received was!
